How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Artful Wares answers one question: will this grinder make the coffee you brew, the way you like it? That means it has to reach the right grind, fit your counter and be easy enough to live with every morning.

Here is how we get to an answer.

1. We start with how you brew

Espresso needs a fine, even grind. Drip, pour over, French press and cold brew each need something coarser.

We check the grind range each maker gives and how many steps sit inside it. When a grinder only suits some brew methods, we say so.

2. We look at the burrs

Conical and flat burrs grind differently, and burr size and material matter too. We note the burr type, its size where the maker gives it and whether replacement burrs are sold.

3. We compare the daily details

We compare hopper size, dosing (timer, scale or single dose), noise, static, how easy it is to clean and how much space it takes. For hand grinders we also look at weight, capacity and how the crank feels to owners.

Makers describe their own products, so we name the brand for every claim. For example, we write "Baratza says" rather than stating a promise as fact.

4. We read what owners report

We look for patterns in what owners say after months of use. Uneven grinds, clumping, stuck burrs, loud motors and parts that wear out all count.

One unhappy owner doesn't sink a grinder. A pattern does.

5. We score each grinder

Our score weighs specs, features and owner feedback against what you're shopping for. A grinder that suits French press may score lower in a guide written for espresso.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

6. We keep pages current

Grinders get new versions, and makers sell close cousins under similar names. We check model numbers, link only new units and skip any model with a known recall.

When a guide changes in a real way, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks come from research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every grinder we cover.

Burrs are sharp, and electric grinders run on mains power. Unplug yours before cleaning and follow the maker's manual.
